The GIO was established in 1998 with the specific purpose to advance and update Optometry knowledge and skills based on the needs of the South African public and the profession. Besides Continuing Practitioner Development(CPD) newsletters, the GIO offers Cutting Edge Seminars, I – Wellness programs and short courses in specialty fields in collaboration with our International network of educators, in particular The New England College of Optometry (NECO) Boston.

Thank you for your support over the past year and I trust that you found the newsletters convenient, educational
and informative. Herewith information in regard to the electronic newsletters
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
When will I receive the first newsletter?
The newsletters and questions will be posted on the website at the beginning of every month. This can be
printed and read at leisure over the next month. There will be 10 electronic newsletters in total (commencing
1 March – December 2016) each worth 3 CPD points and therefore a total of 30 CPD points for the year. 5
points for Ethics, Human Rights and Medical Law will be included.
What if I can’t open the document or I’m having problems downloading then?
You will need to ensure that you have Word on your computers.
CPD Newsletter and questions – Solution to not being able to access the newsletters
Select “CPD Newsletters” on the home page under CPD = ABC
Log in using your HPCSA No (no OP or zeros) and E-mail address that you registered with
Select the correct month, right hand column are Questions & left hand column are the Newsletters –
select your answers and submit directly online. Confirmation of your result is immediate.

If your HPCSA No is OP 0000123, you mustjog on using 123 – no OP or zeros and your E-mail address

What is the pass mark?
The minimum requirement is a result of 80% to receive 3 CPD points per newsletter
What if I do not get 80%?
You may submit your answers 3 times only to acquire the required minimum. No points will be allocated
thereafter. If you do not achieve 80% after 3 tries contact the GIO to reset and allow 3 more tries
How Iong will I have to complete the newsletters and submit mv answer sheets?
Newsletters and questions will stay on the web for the year .Submitting the answers on a monthly basis will keep
you up to date. The last day for submissions for the year is 3 January 2017 – there will be no extension
What is the Quality Assessment request? :
We request that you assess the monthly newsletters annually and highlight areas of interest that are not
When will I receive the second newsletter?

Who will keep record of mv CPD status?
Your answer submissions will be on logged on our website and your CPD points entered on our data base.
An accurate record of your monthly points will be kept by the GIO
You can access your monthly points on the website.
Select “My CPD”.
View your results
Records of your CPD status will be kept by the GIO for the next 3 years as required by HPCSA
On completion of the 10 newsletters, you can generate your certificate from the GIO website (see below) stating
your total number of points with your relevant details required by the HPCSA.
